Happy Friday, friends! It’s been a week since the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie came out, and while I’m biding my time waiting for another chance to watch it and give a full review, I’ve been revisiting some of my older Hunger Games posts. As it turns out, one of the very first posts I wrote for this website was inspired by the song “Pure as the Driven Snow” from TBOSAS, and it had some pretty nice lil truth nuggets to share. So today, I thought I’d do a little Bible journaling process and revisit some of the things I learned back in December 2020. Hope you enjoy!
Take-aways from 2020’s post
This song is one that I think about quite a bit, as it’s on a couple of different playlists that I listen to on a regular basis. I’ve also found myself each year diving deep into my Hunger Games fandom in the month of November, as I reread the series over Thanksgiving break and of course with the new movie coming out this past week. The overall theme, though, is one that is worth thinking about: I need you… I love you… I trust you…
It’s crazy to me, even three years later, how closely that progression resembles how our maturity in Christ should progress. We start out needing Jesus for salvation and not looking for anything more, right? But then, as we walk with Him daily and discover His faithfulness, much like a best friend or soulmate, we begin to love Him more than what He can give us. And of course, trust is the highest expression of love: we depend on our past experiences, and the promises of Scripture, when new obstacles and adventures come our way. I need You… I love You… I trust You…
And then there’s that lovely bridge, which talks about the idea of snow clinging to us, cloaking us, and soaking into our hearts. It’s a little bit uncomfy talking about a human relationship, particularly the one between Coriolucy, but it’s kind of amazing thinking about it from a me-and-Jesus perspective. As we begin to spend more time with Him, He has already clothed us with His righteousness, but now His Spirit begins to have a greater effect on our character and actions, leading us to have a new heart and a new outlook on life. I pray we will all allow this to happen more and more as we grow in our relationship with the Lord, looking for ways to let that new-heart feeling spill over into those around us.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Galatians 3:27 NASB2020
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NASB2020
Here’s the original “Pure as the Driven Snow” post with more of my thoughts on this lovely song.
Bible journaling Pure as the Driven Snow
For today’s Bible journaling page, I wanted to write down some of the surprisingly wise things I wrote in the original “Pure as the Driven Snow” post. I started with a background of white acrylic paint, with a very small amount of blue to give some texture or variation. Since my white acrylic paint is super old and tends to give me too much paint at a time, I had enough for a page in my 2023 journaling Bible and the Message Canvas Bible where I like to keep all of my fandom journaling.
Once the backgrounds were down, I used a typewriter stamp to write the words “I” and “you” with cursive-style lettering in between to finish out the main lines of the song. I filled in direct quotes from the post in a cool purple color, then wrote down additional thoughts with a basic black pen. I also added some snowflake paper, stamping, and washi tape to give the page a little bit more interest. And that’s pretty much it! Now when I go to flip through my Bible years from now, I’ll remember what I learned from this lovely song.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this Bible journaling “Pure as the Driven Snow” from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. What do you think of Rachel Zegler’s version of the song? Personally, I prefer Maiah Wynne, but they’re both good songs and very talented singers.
Happy journaling!
