Happy Saturday, friends, and welcome to a new series/study topic! I was recently introduced to the idea that stars, constellations, and the Zodiac calendar may be yet another say to share and tell the Gospel story. It’s a super cool idea, and I’d love to explore it with you today! Hope you enjoy!
My supplies and notes
Just a little note before we get started with today’s Bible journaling process. Like many things, the Zodiac is something that was originally God-honoring, but that has been skewed and distorted as humans try to live without Him. I grew up avoiding anything to do with the Zodiac because I was always taught that it wasn’t a good thing to follow.
And that is true of the modern-day interpretation, which focuses on the idea that stars and constellations and the position of one planet in relation to another has a direct affect on individual human lives. As it turns out, there are other more ancient interpretations that don’t take that approach. Instead of affecting individuals or telling the future, there’s a story in the stars that points directly to the Gospel and the story of redemption for all of humanity.
I was originally introduced to this idea by Valerie Sjodin, who did an entire journaling/study series on her website this past year. She has even more thoughts on this topic in this post, which I highly recommend that you read, and a whole series of printable stickers too!
she recommended a few different books, but the one I ended up with is The Gospel in the Stars by Joseph Seiss. He spends a chapter focusing on each of the Zodiac constellations and their neighbors and how they tell the story of the Gospel without words. I love what he said as a wrap-up to the chapter on Virgo:
Let us see in Jesus the great Healer, Teacher, and Prophet, even God in humanity, who was to come, and who, though despised and rejected of men, hated, condemned, and pierced, still lives in immortal glory and power as the one true Arcturus (shepherd), to give repentance, remission of sins, and eternal life to as many as accept Him as their Lord and Savior.

Let’s begin!
The Bible journaling process – seeing the Gospel in Virgo
Before creating this page in my Bible, I went through and took down my notes on the chapter. This was actually a few weeks ago now, so I enjoyed the opportunity to look back and re-write some of the things i learned. Here’s a look at my notes pages:
I started the page with a watercolor background of blues and purples. The cooler-toned purple just felt like Virgo to me. I went back later in the day and added my three main take-aways from the main Virgo constellation:
- There are many different theologies that tell of a miraculous virgin birth, such as that of Krishna in Hindu mythology. I love seeing the similarities between what I believe and other world theologies; it’s a sign to me that they all have some hint of the Truth in them.
- The constellation Virgo is holding a spica, or head of wheat in one hand and a branch in the other, which points to Jesus as the branch of David in passages like Zechariah 4:8, which is where I chose to create this page
- Virgo is shown lying down, which is a symbol of the fact that she can’t save us; only Jesus can raise or restore us to right relationship with the Father.
I created this page on a weekday night, so I don’t have any photos of the process, but here’s a look at the finished page:
Conclusion
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post about Virgo as a symbol or sign of the Gospel story. These stars have existed since the beginning of time (give or take), and the humans who interpreted them have almost always come up with this shape. It’s so cool to me how persistent God is in telling us the story of how to get back to Him. It also kinda reminds me of a song I like : ).
Have you ever looked into the Zodiac and all its constellations? What did you learn? I’d love to know!
Happy journaling!

[…] I did the thing this month where I finally broke into a supply that I’ve had for years now and actually used it! I enjoyed the combination of rich blue and lavender (my two favorite colors) in this setup. As I said above, it’s also a great way to start off this new Bible journaling the Zodiac series. You can read the first post of that series here : ) […]
