Happy December, friends, and welcome to a new series of blog posts! I found this super cool devotional several years ago called Finding God in the Hunger Games, and I’m finally working through it. I’ll be sharing what I learn from each of the thirty-day devotional readings, and applying what I learn using my very own Katniss-inspired prayer journal. Hope you enjoy!
Day 4
Day 4 of this devotional is “Only Christ’s Sacrifice Can Atone for Sins,” and it’s another timely one, lemme tell you. The point, of course, is that Katniss’ sacrificing herself for her sister Prim is a picture of what Christ did for us on the Cross. I don’t know, but something about where my mindset was or what I was going through when I read this just hit different! There truly is something to be said for connecting our all-time favorite Earthling stories with the Ultimate Story of the Bible.
Verse of the Day
Romans 3:23-26 NASB20And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.
What I learned
Today I was reminded that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for all of my sins, past, present, and future. I was ruminating on a past regret and some rather harsh words I said years ago. It made me feel responsible for what might’ve happened to that person (a former romantic interest of mine), especially since I was one of a small handful of Christian influences in his life. It also made me realize that, although I was deeply wounded by the way our relationship ended, I wasn’t entirely innocent; the hurt went both ways.
Ultimately, this moment of accidental introspection (oh, the perils of the camera roll!) led to a renewed gratitude for the grace of God in my life. The fact that I said those things breaks my heart, as does my general sinfulness. But His grace and mercy are so much greater than anything I’ve done, and His sacrifice more than pays for my guilt. Amen!
