Hi, friends, and welcome to our newest series of blog posts! I have loved the Hunger Games series with every fiber of my being ever since I read it for the first time in middle school. I found this super cool devotional several years ago called Finding God in the Hunger Games, and I’m finally working through it. I’ll be sharing what I learn from each of the thirty-day devotional readings, and applying what I learn using my very own Katniss-inspired prayer journal. Hope you enjoy!
Day 6
Day 6 of this devotional is called “We Need Christ and Each Other.” Its main idea is that our relationships with others, and especially with other believers, can bring us strength in difficult times. I love the way that the author connects this very relevant topic with the character arc that Katniss goes through. She connects our own struggle to rely on others with Katniss’ continual struggle to trust and “rely on others as well as herself.” So there’s another reference to my Favorite Fictional Love Story of All Time, eee!
Verse of the Day
1 John 4:11, 16 NASBBeloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another… We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
What I learned
Today I reflected on the fact that even Jesus, when He walked on the earth, asked for things (“you give them something to eat” at the feeding of the 5k) and accepted gifts (like Mary washing His feet). Although He didn’t need anything, and actually came out and said “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28), He still accepted when others wanted to show love and serve Him. I pray that my life will show the same balance between giving and receiving love, being willing to accept the gifts and service of others. I prayer I will continue to unlearn an old belief I had that I needed to prove my salvation through the things I did.
BTW, my brother, who’s now a college grad and future youth pastor, wrote a book about this exact thing! You can find it on Amazon here : ).
