Finding God in the Hunger Games, Day 7

Happy February, friends, and welcome to the next installment of our newest blog post series! I have love the Hunger Games series with every fiber of my being ever since I read it for the first time in middle school. I found this super cool devotional several years ago called Finding God in the Hunger Games, and I’m finally working through it. I’ll be sharing what I learn from each of the thirty-day devotional readings, and applying what I learn using my very own Katniss-inspired prayer journal. Hope you enjoy!

Day 7

Day 7 of this devotional is called “God Never Abandons the Poor, Afflicted, or Oppressed,” and it’s talking about another aspect of Katniss’ character arc. Throughout the series, our FMC goes from I-just-want-to-keep-my-family-alive to the ultimate revolutionary and defender of the oppressed that we all know she was meant to be. I love this angle, and I love how the author turns it to the Gospel!

Verse of the Day

But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother [or sister] in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?

1 John 3:17 NASB

What I learned

Today I learned that, just like Katniss, we all have a responsibility to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. This is an interesting thing for me, as there are many people in my area who need help, but I’m not entirely sure how I personally can help them. Every time I see an unhoused person, for example, my heart goes out to them. btu I rarely carry cash, and I’m not even sure that giving cash to someone on the side of the road is the best way to help them.

I’m not sure what the solution is to this, to be quite honest with you. But I will say that being generous is a priority both for me and for my MMC (fangirl for significant other), and I hope that we’ll be able to see those whom God wants us to reach out and help.
