Finding God in the Hunger Games, Day 9

Happy Pi Day, friends, and welcome to a new series of blog posts! I found this super cool devotional several years ago called Finding God in the Hunger Games, and I’m finally working through it. I’ll be sharing what I learn from each of the thirty-day devotional readings, and applying what I learn using my very own Katniss-inspired prayer journal. Hope you enjoy!

Day 9

Day 9 of this devotional is called “We Are Ignited by the Holy Spirit,” and I love that it so clearly connects to the theme of Katniss being the Girl on Fire. I think they could’ve picked a different verse for this day, as the chosen verse is Luke 4:18, which is definitely referring to Jesus more so than us as His followers. That being said, there are plenty of passages that DO refer to us as believers being ignited by the Holy Spirit, so the topic still stands.

Verse of the Day

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
[There is] one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:1-6

What I learned

One of my favorite parts of this devotional reading was the author’s remark that Cinna’s beautiful dresses “ignite within her a spark of courage,” helping her to believe that she might actually have a fighting chance to win the Games. The author also describes Katniss as being “commissioned by the flames of justice,” chosen to lead the people of Panem into freedom from oppression. In the same way, I learned, we as believers are powerless to accomplish anything for the Kingdom without the help of Holy Spirit. It’s not up to us to accomplish anything– while we are active participants, we are ultimately the recipients of the gifts and grace of our Savior.
