Loved: a Mixtape Inspired by Illustrated Faith

The moment I saw the new devotional from Illustrated Faith, I was in love. If you didn’t know, Illustrated Faith is a company that combines curated art/craft supplies with devotional content to encourage us to express and grow in our faith creatively, especially through Bible journaling. This month’s devotional is called Mixtape (hence the title of this post), and its focus is replacing the negative thoughts in our heads with truth from God’s Word. So good! And so perfect for this year xD. This devotional also lines up so amazingly with the preface of this blog. So, without further ado, here are songs to remind you that you’re loved, inspired by week one of the Illustrated Faith Mixtape devotional. Enjoy!

You can get the devotional (while supplies last) or the newest IF devotional kit here :).

“Unpack Your Heart” by Phillip Phillips

This is an excellent song to start the playlist with. It was written as a love song for a human, but just imagine God saying these things to you: “Bring your secrets, bring your scars, bring your glory, all you are, bring your daylight, bring your dark, share your silence and unpack your heart.” Woah. What an invitation! Knowing that it’s safe to share everything with God reassures us that He loves us unconditionally.

“She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5

Another song that was written for a human, but so beautifully reflects God’s heart towards us. “He was always there to help her, she always belonged to someone else” (God loves us, even when we’re far from Him) and “I don’t mind spending every day out on your corner in the pouring rain… She will be loved.” He’ll do whatever it takes to get to us, speaking truth deep into our hearts. Here’s a verse to go with this song: Hosea 2:14.

“If My Heart Was a House” by Owl City

this song is one of my all-time favorites! There’s just so much goodness in it. Specifically this line: “Risk it all, ’cause I’ll catch you when you fall, wherever you go, if my heart was a house, you’d be home” speaks so wonderfully into God’s love for us. He will always have us in His heart.

“Stereo Hearts” by Adam Levine and Gym Class Heroes

This song is so happy and sweet and heartfelt, it’s hard not to sing along. “My heart’s a stereo, it beats for you so listen close, hear my thoughts in every note; make me your radio, and turn me up when you feel low, this melody was meant for you, so sing along to my stereo.” Zephaniah 3:17 reflects the heart of these lyrics almost perfectly! God is singing over us in love, and we should tune into His heart (Philippians 4:8).

Here’s my Spotify playlist inspired by week one of the Illustrated Faith Mixtape devotional 😉

“Cactus in the Valley” by Lights featuring Adam Young/Owl City

This is a beautiful song that fits the vulnerable and heartfelt feel of the mixtape devo so perfectly. “Wipe the mark of sadness from my face; show me that Your love will never change; if my yesterday is a disgrace, tell me that You still recall my name.” *mic drop* God’s love will never change, and He doesn’t mind reassuring us of that.

“Remedy” by Adele

Another beautiful and heartfelt song. “When the pain cuts you deep, when the night keeps you from sleeping, just look and you will see that I will be your remedy. When the world seems so cruel, and your heart makes you feel like a fool, I promise you will see that I will be, I will be your Remedy.” God is our comfort, our protector, and our steadfast provider. He will always love us.

“How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” (old hymn, but I adore Owl City’s rendition)

The perfect way to sum up this playlist of beautiful reminders: “How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure…” Enough said there. God’s love is deeper than we could ever comprehend. (The version I love isn’t on Spotify, so here it is on YouTube :).

Hope you’re encouraged by this playlist inspired by the Illustrated Faith Mixtape devotional. Here’s the Spotify playlist below, which I welcome you to follow if you wish, as well as a link to all the songs I love that remind me of Jesus.

Happy faith-girling! (Yes, that’s a word, I just made it up 😉
