Owl City – If My Heart Was A House

Happy day, friends, and thanks for stopping by my website! I’ve been wanting to share my thoughts about this song by Owl City for a long time now. It’s one of the first fandom songs that pointed me to Scripture, and it’s still very close to my heart. I used to listen to “If My Heart Was a House” every single night before I went to sleep, and it’s one of my absolute favorite Owl City songs to this day. Hope you’ll enjoy fangirling with me!

Fandom: “Circle me, and the needle moves gracefully back and forth/ If my heart was a compass, you’d be north/ Risk it all, ’cause I’ll catch you when you fall/ Wherever you go, if my heart was a house, you’d be home” – Owl City, “If My Heart Was a House”

Verses: Deuteronomy 33:27, Isaiah 30:21, John 14:23

Truth: We can make our home in God’s heart, even as we invite Him to make a home in ours.

The fandom

This song has always been a source of comfort and happiness for me. I love Adam’s vocals and their light, soft quality, especially in the bridge. Ooh, that bridge is so sweet and lovely with the soft-to-full-volume change and the super heartfelt feel to it. I just love it so much.

The whole of “If My Heart Was a House” is a sweet adorable love song about feeling close to a loved one. Adam sings about feeling colder and walking more slowly when he’s apart from his love, and that she is the True North that guides his heart. He also sings of assurances that He will help her when she falls, and that she has a home in his heart. Again, just super sweet and lovely thoughts of a desire for close relationship with someone you love.

As I said above, this song is one of the first that reminded me of a Bible passage, and that verse (Deuteronomy 33:27) has become one of the most impactful in my mind and heart. I can’t help but think of God’s promise to keep us in His heart, and our commitment to keep Him as the True North that guides our thoughts and our actions.

The verses

Here are some verses I’ve found that parallel the ideas of “If My Heart Was a House”:

If my heart was a compass, You’d be North

Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.

Isaiah 30:21 NASB

Teach me to do your will, for You are my God; let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Psalm 143:10 NASB

Risk it all, cause I’ll catch you when you fall

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion [endures] throughout all generations. The LORD is faithful in His words, And holy in all His works. The LORD supports all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down.

Psalm 145:13-14 NASB

If My heart was a house, you’d be home

“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to your help, And the clouds in His majesty. The eternal God is a hiding place, And underneath are the everlasting arms;

Deuteronomy 33:26-27 NASB

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will follow My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make [Our] dwelling with him.

John 14:23 NASB

The righteous person will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

Planted in the house of the LORD, They will flourish in the courtyards of our God.

Psalm 92:12-13 NASB

Application

In response to what we’ve learned and reflected on this week, here are some “I will” statements to hold close and apply in our lives:

  • I will look to God alone as the TRue North that I follow and ask Him for directions in everything I do
  • I will take comfort in the fact that I have a home in the heart of Almighty God, and He will forgive my failures
  • I will act with confidence knowing that the mistakes I make are covered by the grace and provision of Christ
  • I will invite Him to come further and more completely into my heart by seeking to make a good home for Him there (by keeping His word)
