Philippians 4:8 studies, part four – “Pure”

Today is day four of 2026, and day four of peeling back the layers of Philippians 4:8, one word at a time.

Today’s word is “pure,” which refers to a lack of sinfulness or sinful desires. Following the example of Jesus, believers aim to “purify themselves as He is pure” (1 John 3:3), growing more like the Lord as we reject the desires we once had.

A commentator on James 3:17 defines the purity of godly wisdom as “the absence of any sinful attitude or motive.” Another commentator says that it is “seeking nothing but God’s glory, and using no other means to attain it than those of His own prescribing.” In other words, to be pure means to aim for God’s glory, but only in ways that glorify or please Him.

So when I’m working to share the Gospel with people on the internets, am I doing so in a way that is sincere, merciful, and non-judgmental? This is what I’m reflecting on today.

Happy January!
