Hey ya’ll, Que lo Kayslee here, bringing you some cool beans jams to make you feel wild and free this Saturday. Don’t forget to follow my Spotify playlist if you enjoy these hits!
“I Woke Up in a Car” by Something Corporate, mixed by Adam Young
This song has the whimsical and slightly quirky lyrics characteristic of groups like Relient K and Owl City, so it makes sense that Adam Young collaborated with this group. He’s really added his own unique flair to the song, with and electronic snare drum line and violins, with a hint of xylophone and horns. So many layers of magical sounds, it’s beautiful <3
“Screen” by Twenty One Pilots
You’ve probably heard this song many times before, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful. I adore the piano line, which plays so well with the drums and ukelele in the background. The lyrics are amazing: “I’m standing in front of you, oh, I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cold, everything together trying to be so cold.” TOP has another very distinctive style, and I love how they alternate between singing and rapping. A jam for sure π
“How I Became the Sea” by Owl City
*enraptured* Just… so… beautiful…. This is one of my absolute favorite songs by Owl City. Like, almost all of them are my favorites, but this one is definitely in the top 10. It’s truly a masterpiece, showing off Adam Young’s vocal range, plus his amazing talent with lyrics and the imaginative imagery that he creates in all the best songs. Favorite lyrics: “When the sky fell in, when the hurricanes came for me, I could finally crash again, and that’s how I became the sea.”
“Ahead By A Century” by Tragically Hip (from Anne With an E)
I just discovered this song this week. It’s the theme song from the show “Anne with an E” on Netflix, and it’s sooo good! The acoustic guitar and tambourine combo really evoke the simple, happy and imaginative character of the show, and the lyrics seem to describe the main character Anne perfectly! Favorite lyrics: “Illusions of someday, cast in a golden light.”
Born to Be Yours” by Kygo and Imagine Dragons
Seems like this song is from a movie or maybe a commercial, but not 100% certain of that. Regardless, it’s super catchy and easy to sing along to (ask me how I know lol). The lyrics almost remind me of “I Bet My Life,” which is another excellent Imagine Dragons song. I love the electronic sort of twist in the background track, with a hint of violins too. Favorite lyrics: “I know I’ve given up a hundred times before, but I know a miracle is not something to ignore.”
“Maintenant” by Rupa and the April Fishes
Another French song this week, this time with a nice jazzy feel to it. Seriously, even if you don’t speak French, you can’t listen to this song and not feel like dancing. It has the magical combination of accordian (I think?), bass strings, and drums, plus an expressive female lead singer that is so quintessentially French, it’s wonderful. A few of the lyrics translated: “Once again you find yourself face to face with tomorrow, tell me what you see there, when you hold me, look at me.” So beautiful! Also side note, looking at the cover art, I think it may be a clever parody of a famous French Revolution-era painting :).
That’s all for this week. Here’s the Spotify playlist just in case you haven’t followed yet π
Happy Saturday!
