Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved

Fandom: Maroon 5, “She Will Be Loved”

Verses: Hosea 2:14, Isaiah 61:3

Nugget: God loves us unconditionally, even when we are far from Him. He calls us into wilderness seasons so that He can prove to us how much we are loved.

Many people in the fandom world, and the world in general, are great fans of Maroon 5. This group has given us so many beautiful songs, and some of them have even deeper meaning than you might have realized. This week, we’ll talk about how Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved” teaches us about God’s unfailing love for us. For more songs related to this topic, check out this post :).

This song was something I held onto in one of the hardest seasons of my life. I had been in a relationship for the first time in my life, after nineteen years of Romantic longing. He was like my knight in shining armor, courteous and smart and witty and handsome, and we went so well together. It felt like a match made in heaven.

Then suddenly, at the end of last summer, it was over.

I was devastated. I found it hard to keep from crying in front of my friends and family, and all but impossible when I was alone. It felt like my future was gone, and all that was left were ashes. Although I had been through difficult seasons before, this one seemed too difficult for me to go through.

I did make it through, eventually, with the help of prayer, friends, and a whole lot of ugly crying. And music: songs I played on repeat, clinging to the truth they held. Here’s what “She Will Be Loved” has to say:

God loves us, even when we’re far from Him.

“He was always there to help her, she always belonged to someone else.” This song is written about a romantic relationship, a man who is there for the woman he loves, even when she refuses to be with him. Even when she chases others instead. I’m a firm believer that earthly romances have their root in God’s love for each of us. That same romantic spirit that makes us sigh over songs like this one is also the spirit of God chasing after us with His love.

To apply that thought to this song: when we’re chasing everything but God, lost in our own ambitions or feelings or relationships or amusements, He’s always there, waiting for us to turn to Him.

God will do whatever it takes to convince us to come to Him.

“I don’t mind spending every day, out on your corner in the pouring rain; look for the girl with the broken smile, and ask her if she wants to stay awhile.” Just imagine this: a handsome man, standing on the corner next to his beloved’s house, holding a bouquet of flowers… *squeals of delight* Now imagine that as God, coming back again and again, calling to us. He calls when we’re far away, and when we’re near. That’s what He did for me this past year, and that’s what He’ll do for you too.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.” Hosea 2:14-15

These verses are referring to the nation of Israel, but I am also a firm believer that they can refer to us as individuals also. When we’re in a wilderness season, God is there, calling to us. Especially as believers, He speaks to us and helps us to believe and trust Him more fully than we ever have before.

The wilderness seasons, the ugly crying and disappointed hopes, can be seasons of growth and wonder. He will turn the darkest valleys into a door of hope.

God’s love is never-changing and eternally faithful.

“She will be loved… She will be loved…” the song says it twice, as though to reassure the listener of the singer’s intent. In the same way, God restates His love for us over, and over, and over again, in multiple ways and in different places. It really does take that long for us to truly understand it, and it’s why we need Him so desperately.

We need His love to keep out the negative thoughts and harmful influences in our life. He knows they’re there, just like the singer here: “I know where you hide, alone in your car, know all of the things that make you who you are…” God knows us more deeply than anyone ever will. He knows all our mistakes and our flaws and our insecurities, and He loves us anyway. that makes Him the safest place in the world to turn to and lay all of those things down, to rest knowing that someone understands what we’re going through.

She will be loved…

I have one more verse, and then we’ll be done for the day:

“to grant to those who mourn in Zion– to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. ” Isaiah 61:3

Here’s a page in my Isaiah scripture journal to go with this verse! See more about the ESV scripture journals here 🙂

A year after my relationship ended, I finally feel healed. I am content being single, and confident in my relationships and my future. Instead of the ashes I saw before, I now see the beauty of where God has placed me, and the crown of beauty that He has bestowed upon me.

Where have you seen the beauty of God’s love in your life? No matter when, where or how you come to Him, you will always find love.
