The Paper Kites – Bloom

Hellos, lovely people, and welcome to a Christmas-Eve-Eve edition of The Gospel According To! Today I’ve been thinking of a super chill and sweet love song, “Bloom” by The Paper Trees, which I first discovered as the sound behind an Instagram reel. I’m looking forward to unpacking the lyrics of this gorgeous song with you today. Enjoy!

Fandom: The Paper Kites, “Bloom”

Verses: Psalm 73:28, Deuteronomy 30:11-14, Psalm 145:18, James 4:8

Truth: The nearness of God is always accessible and always good.

Fandom

I love this song so much my friends 🥹 Like, if I had any desire whatsoever to be in a romantic relationship, this is what I’d want it to look like. It’s soooooo sweet!!!

I'm the morning when I wake
And the sun is coming through
Oh, you fill my lungs with sweetness
and you fill my head with you
shall I write it in a letter?
shall I try to get it down?
Oh, you fill my head with pieces of a song I can't get out...

Verses

But as for me, the nearness of God is good for me; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, So that I may tell of all Your works.

Psalm 73:28 NASB20

This verse matches the refrain of the song almost exactly and I love it so much!! It reminds me that God’s presence will always be accessible to me. Here’s another that echoes the same message:

The LORD is near to all who call on Him, To all who call on Him in truth.

Psalm 145:18 NASB20

Another passage I found in my studies points to how the presence of God can become more evident in our lives: when we focus on knowing Him through His Word.

For this commandment which I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it far away. It is not in heaven, that you could say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us and get it for us, and proclaim it to us, so that we may follow it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you could say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us and get it for us and proclaim it to us, so that we may follow it?’ On the contrary, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may follow it.

Deuteronomy 30:11-14 NASB20

Given to the Israelites as they were exiting their enslavement in Egypt, these verses point to the nearness of God to His people. It was surely a reassuring and challenging message to a people who were learning how to re-create their identity as the people of God rather than slaves. It’s also a challenge to us today. As I’m sitting here, I have no fewer than SEVENTEEN copies of the Word within arm’s reach. That is an honor and a privilege that I’m working on appreciating more!! James affirms this thought in his letter:

Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse [your] hands, you sinners; and purify [your] hearts, you double-minded.

James 4:8 NASB20

I’ve heard people say many times that “God is a gentleman.” He won’t force Himself on us, only call to our hearts and give us clear signals that He is near. He gives us the choice of whether we will come close to Him, or keep living in ignorance, focused only on our own desires and pursuits.

These last two verses echo the last verse of “Bloom”:

Attention, Israel!

God, our God! God the one and only!

Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got!

from Deuteronomy 6, The Message

Dawn and dusk take turns

calling, “Come and worship.”

from Psalm 65, The Message

When the evening pulls the sun down, and the day is almost through, Oh, the whole world it is sleeping, but my world is You.

These lines and these verses give me the feeling of sitting in the opening of a tent, watching the beauty of nature and being quiet before the Lord. Goals!! I can’t exactly do this in the middle of winter and urban life, but I can dream, right?

Application

In response to our reflection and study here today, here are a few “I will” statements to act on:

  • I will seek the face of God continually by looking to His Word
  • I will quiet my heart before Him and remember that he is always with me
  • I will look around and look up to see where His presence is evident in the world around me

My journal pages

I started my journal pages for this song all the way back in July, then came back to them just this past week. I don’t think I could’ve anticipated the wintry feel that they ended up having, but I do love the way they turned out! I loved using some of the stickers from my Pipsticks subscription to decorate and fill in the empty spaces around my lettering and notes.

Conclusion

I hope you’ve enjoyed over-analyzing the lyrics of this beautiful song with me today. Have a very Merry Christmas, even if you don’t officially celebrate, and a blessed New Year.

Happy fangirling!

P. S. Today is also my sister’s birthday! I know she’d love if you gave her blog a visit and told her happy birthday from me. She’s turning 18 today!!
