Hello friends, and welcome back to The Gospel According to, where we dig deep and overanalyze the best stories and songs that humanity creates to find the pieces of Biblical truth hidden inside. Fandom: “All You Need to Know” by Gryffin + SLANDER featuring Callie Lehman

Verses: John 14:15-16, 26, Psalm 55:22, 94:18-19, 139:23-24

Truth: God’s promises will never fail; He will never leave us; we can trust Him and should give Him all of our thoughts, fears, and feelings.

The Fandom

It’s almost impossible to believe that this song is anything but Christian/Biblical – the words are so similar to Scripture… But it’s also one of those sweet adorable songs of faithful, enduring love and promises to stand by your beloved human. Romantic or not, human love is precious and important, and when it’s healthy, our love for each other is a picture of God’s love for us. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite lyrics from “All You Need to Know”:

Everything you feel, put it all on me

All of your thoughts, I want everything

And when you get sad, like you do sometimes

Put it all on me

Put it all on me

“All You Need to Know”

I’ll lift you when you’re feeling low,

I’ll hold you when the night gets cold

You’ll never have to be alone

And that’s all you need to know.

I love the tone of this song. It’s super reassuring to hear the singer’s confidence that everything will work out for good, that his beloved will never be alone, that they can trust him with everything that troubles them. He boils it down to a simple truth, and says, “that’s all you need to know,” inviting the audience to trust that he’ll do what he says and not doubt him. Which is SO COOL because that’s exactly what God asks us to do when we come to faith in Him! Let’s talk about this below 😊

The Verses

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever… But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:15-16, 26 ESV

These verses promise the presence of the Holy Spirit with and within believers. It echoes the line, “You don’t have to listen carefully, I’ll tell you a thousand times” from the song. While it’s important to listen to the Spirit’s voice, it’s comforting to know that, if my heart is stubborn and refuses to believe the first time, He might remind me of the truth multiple times in different ways– sort of like listening to the same song over and over, but finding a different meaning or significance each time.

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 55:22 ESV

When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

Psalm 94:18-19 ESV

These verses remind me of the Everything you feel, put it all on me… and when you get sad, like you do sometimes, put it all on me lines. Psalm 55:22 literally commands us to cast our burden on the Lord, and Psalm 94 provides assurance that He will uphold us in the midst of stumbling, anxiety, and sadness. All the more reason to give Him everything, amiright?

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.

Psalm 139:23-24 NASB

These verses point more towards the application of the truths in this song/these verses. As I’m giving everything that’s in my heart to the Lord, I want to make sure that I confess the sins I know about and ask Him to reveal the places that are not fully surrendered to Him. These are the things that will hold us back from growing in grace and knowledge of Christ, and He is faithful to gently point them out and replace the lies we believe with truth instead. When He asks us for everything, He really means everything!

Application

To wrap up this post, I wanted to give you some actionable steps or take-aways to help apply the truth of God’s Word in your real, actual life. This makes having a song to listen to especially handy, because now every time I hear “All You Need to Know,” I’m reminded of the truth in these verses – and I hope that you will be too. Here are a few “I will” statements to respond to these verses:

In response to this truth, I will…

  • Rely on the Lord when I feel sad, anxious, or afraid
  • Give Jesus all of my cares and burdens
  • Listen to God’s voice of warmth, love, and comfort
  • Ask Him to reveal the places where I’m walking in doubt, unbelief, or sin
  • Lift others up with the words that have comforted me

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this post about “All You Need to Know” by Gryffin + SLANDER featuring Callie Lehmann. How have you been comforted by Holy Spirit and the Word of God? I’d love to know!
