This week, in honor of International Friendship Day, we’re focusing on Anne of Green Gables and the Anne With an E Netflix series. The Horizontal View: Friendship for Life

Let’s start by looking at this fandom form a horizontal, or human-to-human, point of view. Anne and Diana’s friendship is one of the best in all of literature. In the book series, they remain friends until their children are grown and married themselves. They support each other through all of the various life dramas that each of them goes through. And they remain faithful to each other even through being forbidden to do so several times.

Anne being the poetic and expressive character that she is, we have a wealth of quotes and sayings to fangirl over as relates to friendship in the Anne of Green Gables series. Here are some that come out sounding almost like Scripture, and some Bible verses that actually do sound like Scripture (because, well, they are lol).

The Vertical View: Biblical Community and Holy Help

To further our analysis of this fandom, let’s start by defining two important terms: kindred spirit and bosom friend. Anne’s deepest desire in life is to know and be known through close friend and family relationships. In her eyes, a kindred spirit is someone who shares similar values, perspectives, and interests. As the series progresses, Anne finds many kindred spirits whom she loves wholeheartedly. But she only has one bosom friend, which she describes as someone who will always be faithful to her and in whom she can confide her “inmost soul.” This one bosom friend is Diana Barry, although Gilbert might later be added to the list in his own way.

Like Anne, every one of us has a desire for companionship and love. Some have had more success at this than others, but we can all name at least a couple of people whom we would call friend. Ancient Israel, the culture in which most of the Bible was written, is a highly collective society, meaning that In the Christian walk, we are called to walk in discipleship and fellowship with fellow believers, whom we might refer to as kindred spirits (because we all have the same Holy Spirit in us). But there is only one friend who we know will never leave us: Jesus Himself. This is the one we might call our bosom friend, since we really can confide our inmost soul in Him.

In the same way, we are called as believers to help and strengthen those who need us. In Galatians 6, a burden is something that is too heavy for someone to carry on their own. Carrying someone’s burden could mean praying for them, providing a need they have, or filling the roles they would normally fill until they can take their place again. This is a vital part of walking in fellowship with other believers.

As she matures and develops as a character, Anne learns what it really means to be a friend and to have friends. This quote shows that maturity and developing understanding, as her friends have truly taken up residence in her heart. In the same way, when we choose to walk in the way of the Lord, He makes His permanent home in our heart.

Said another way, our goal as believers is to bring more people to Jesus, who will then become His friend and also ours, and who will seek to follow Him as closely as we do. Since we have the same goal, worldview and interests, this means that the more people we share the Gospel with, the more kindred spirits we’ll gain. So cool!

  • “The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” Psalm 25:14 ESV This verse speaks of the covenant of God, which is not unlike the oath of faithful friendship that Anne and Diana create at the beginning of the series. In his covenant, God promises to protect the people of Israel and bless them above all others– as long as they honor Him alone as God. This covenant is the very best part of God’s heart towards us, for even when we broke the covenant, He upheld it– right up to sending the perfect human (Jesus) to complete our side of the deal for us. In return, we give our best to God by honoring Him as a friend and as Lord. We make Him a priority in our life and do everything we can to bring Him glory and joy.

In this case, giving up your life for someone can mean literally dying for them. But what may be even more difficult is living for them– choosing to put their needs and interests before your own, treating their joys and sorrows as though they were your own. That’s what it means to give someone the best of you, and hopefully you receive the best of them in return.
