Hello, my friends, and welcome to another Gospel According To post, where I find all the connections between Gospel truths and so-called “secular” stories and songs.
Fandom: “If you feel insignificant, you better think again/ better wake up because you’re part of something way bigger…”
Verses: Ephesians 2:8-10, Philippians 1:6, Galatians 5:1
Truth: God’s work in us through Christ transforms us into His poem to the world, an expression of His heart and the story He’s telling in us.
Fandom: Beyonce “BIGGER”
I first heard this song during a retreat at the beginning of my summer job this past year. It played as the speaker of the day invited us to breathe deeply and be present. She highlighted a particular phrase, “life is your birthright,” and went on to describe how self-care allows us to become “agents of healing in our circles of influence.” It was such a good talk, and one that I’ve enjoyed looking back on as I’m working on this post. But this is the biggest takeaway that I had from that talk and this song:
We are God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10). The Greek word for this is “poiema,” which sounds like the English word “poem.” A poem is The heart and character of a person on paper; we read the paper and determine what the author is like. So if we are God’s poem, then we are created to reveal a piece of His character to the world.

I didn’t think I wrote down the name of the speaker I heard from that day, but I actually did! Here’s her website : )
But anyway, back to the song at hand…
Verses: God’s Masterpiece
Let’s start off today’s study with the verse that I heard broken down at that retreat last summer:
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this [is] not of yourselves, [it is] the gift of God;
not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10 NASB
You are the living Word, a reflection of God’s character in real-life, high-definition color and sound. What He’s done in you is mean to be a living testimony to who He is and an invitation to those who don’t yet know Him personally. And none of it comes from us; we have nothing worthwhile to offer on our own. It’s all the gift of God.
[For I am] confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6 NASB20
Part of writing a poem is the process of drafting and re-writing, finding the perfect words that will express the Author’s heart in the most beautiful way possible. I love the idea that we are all a work in process, and we have a part to play in what our lives will tell the world about who our Savior is.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have [it] abundantly.
John 10:10 NASB20
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 NASB
Life is your birthright, they hid that in the fine print/ Take the pen and re-write it. If Christ came so that we would have abundant life and died so that we’d be set free, then making choices that ensure we have that abundant life is one of the ways that we can live in light of what’s been done for us.

Application
In response to what we learned from this song and the verses we studied, here are a few “I will” statements to live out in everyday life:
- I will look for ways to know God and reflect His character as his poem to the world
- I will keep my focus upward on my Maker rather than on myself
- I will glorify and thank God with every breath and everything that I have
- I will make decisions and ask for guidance as I become more conscious of the story that my life tells the world
My journal pages
For this journal process I used my printable stickers made especially to match this song, some washi tape, and some stickers that I’d had for a long time (2021, I think?). I also decided to print out the lyrics on sticker paper and stick them down on the “fandom” page instead of writing them out by hand. I love how clear sticker paper melts into the page!
Free printable stickers!!
Here are some free printable journaling stickers for you to download and use in your own journaling and study process. Enjoy!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post about Beyonce’s “BIGGER” from the soundtrack of the live-action Lion King movie. How are you living your life as God’s masterpiece?
