Frozen 2 – Show Yourself, plus free printable journaling stickers!!

Greetings, friends, and welcome to another fandoms post! Wrapping up this little study series on the attributes of God and the Trinity is God the Holy Spirit. This has often made me think of the lovely song “Show Yourself” from Frozen 2 and Elsa’s search for her destiny through the frozen world of Alta Hallen. Enjoy!

Fandom: “I can sense you there, like a friend I’ve always known… Show yourself, let me see who You are!!”

Verses: John 3:8, 1 Cor. 2:6-7,10-16, Eph. 3:14-19, Jeremiah 29:11-13

Truth: God Almighty is both knowable and findable, and He gives us Holy Spirit to call us closer to Him.

This song puts Idina Menzel’s incredible vocal range on full display. Starting in the basement-level notes that are difficult for me (a mid-range soprano) to sing, it ascends all the way to triumphant, soaring heights as Elsa discovers her true identity.

I love the sense of anticipation and expectant hope that this song gives. Something about the breathless tone of the first stanzas and the piano line throughout gives me chills every time! Not to mention watching it for the first time in theaters back in 2020– I definitely had some misty eyes happening because I knew immediately what the lyrics would mean to me.

Every inch of me is trembling, but not from the cold/ Something is familiar, like a dream I can reach, but not quite hold/ I can sense You there, like a friend I’ve always known/ I’m arriving, and it feels like I am home…

Verses

This verse to me feels like a response to the words of Jesus describing the ministry of Holy Spirit in John’s Gospel:

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you… When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

John 16:7, 13 ESV

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:27

Blue Letter Bible defines the Greek word translated here as “Helper” in this way: “of the Holy Spirit destined to take the place of Christ with the apostles (after his ascension to the Father), to lead them to a deeper knowledge of the gospel truth, and give them divine strength needed to enable them to undergo trials and persecutions on behalf of the divine kingdom.”

I can almost hear Elsa singing behind these verses: Show Yourself, I’m dying to meet you/ Show Yourself, it’s Your turn/ Are you the one I’ve been looking for all of my life? Oh, show yourself, I’m ready to learn…

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

John 3:8 NASB20

It’s amazing to think about the paradox here: The same God who has all these mysteries and truths that are too big for our brains to comprehend, is also the God who invites us to know Him through Holy Spirit. Here’s a prayer of the apostle Paul that further elaborates on the ministry of Holy Spirit:

For this reason I bend my knees before the Father,

from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,

that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self,

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; [and] that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth,

and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:14-19 NASB20

The prayer of Paul, which I believe aligns with the will of God the Father, is for us to comprehend the width and length and height and depth of Christ which surpasses all natural knowledge or comprehension. Holy Spirit, like a friend or a Counselor, comes to us to remind us of the truth that we have believed in. He’s here to call us to seek deeper knowledge of the truth, and to empower us to endure when we face trials of many kinds.

Elsa’s humble-but-bold request in the bridge of “Show Yourself” reminds me of these verses:

‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.

‘And you will seek Me and find [Me] when you search for Me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 NASB20

“This is what the LORD says, [He] who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to create it, [He] whose name is the LORD:
‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

Jeremiah 33:3 NASB20

Come to me now, open Your door, don’t make me wait one moment more…

And He promises to answer our prayer, always.

Application

In response to what we’ve learned and meditated on today, here are a couple of “I will” statements to help us live out the truth irl:

  • I will seek and ask God to reveal His mysteries to me every day because I’ll never, ever get to the end of them
  • I will walk in the power and security provided by the Spirit
  • I will boldly and humbly ask God for a deeper knowledge of His truth through the ministry of Holy Spirit

My journal pages

I loved making these pages so much! This was another day when I was at my summer job in the mountains of Missouri, sitting at a picnic table with some friends and co-workers, all of us doing our own study and enjoying each other’s company. Plus the soft blues and purples are super pretty!
