Charlie Puth – One Call Away

Happy new week, friends, and welcome to another fandoms-as-Gospel post! I’ve been absolutely loving this one song by Charlie Puth. It’s a super sweet love song called “One Call Away,” and it immediately sounded like a prayer and a promise from the Father. Hope you enjoy fangirling with me!

Fandom: “I’m only one call away; I’ll be there to save the day; Superman got nothin’ on me; I’m only one call away…” – Charlie Puth, One Call Away

Verses: Psalm 145:17-19, 1 Kings 8:39, Psalm 62:8, Deuteronomy 4:7, Matthew 6:5-8

Truth: Wherever we are and however we feel, we can always call on God and pour our hearts out to Him.

The fandom: Charlie Puth, One Call Away

I found this song through this printable set by Abigail Clone, a super-talented artist for Illustrated Faith. She used the lyrics, especially in the chorus, to point to the fact that God will always hear our prayers. I loved finding a kindred spirit who also sees the spiritual side of secular songs like this one! It really blessed my heart, plus the printable she made is super cute.

Like, bro! The description on IF’s website literally says “what if we looked at this song with a Biblical lens?” and that’s exactly how I sometimes describe what I do here!! Kindred spirits: 100 🤩😊😎

Here’s my favorite quote from Abigail’s little devotional that was part of this kit:

God is ALWAYS there to save the day, to pick up our broken pieces, and restore us with peace and love! And He certainly doesn’t leave us alone; He is always in our hearts.

She goes on to talk about how well God knows each of our hearts and how He is available to us always, no matter what. Seriously, I love her words and her art, and this song fits so well with the Scriptures!!

The verses

The first two verses on this list came from Abigail’s devotional; the rest are cross-references or other verses that came to mind while I was journaling this song.

The LORD is righteous in all His ways, And kind in all His works.

The LORD is near to all who call on Him, To all who call on Him in truth.

He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry for help and save them.

Psalm 145:17-19

I love how these verses describe the Lord as both righteous and kind. So good!!

…then hear in heaven, Your dwelling place, and forgive and act, and give to each in accordance with all his ways, whose heart You know–for You alone know the hearts of all mankind–

1 Kings 8:39

This verse comes from King Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the Temple that he built. It’s a beautiful prayer that I will definitely go back and study sometime soon!

Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your hearts before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

Psalm 62:8

I’ve come back to this verse many times over the years. God is a safe place to pour out our hearts and be safe in His refuge. Here’s another song/post about this theme!

“For what great nation [is there] that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him?

Deuteronomy 4:7

God is near to us whenever we call to Him.

And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they will be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But as for you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you. And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Matthew 6:5-8

Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him! Superman got nothin’ on Me, indeed.

Application

In response to what I learned from Abigail’s printable and Charlie Puth’s “One Call Away,” here are a few “I will” statements to live out:

  • I will call on the Lord and pour my heart out to Him at all times
  • I will trust and know that He hears my prayers and knows my heart
  • I will pray for others and invite them to pray/offer to pray with them when they have worries or concerns

My journal pages

Here are the pages I did in my Fangirl: Fulfilled devotional journal as I reflected on Charlie Puth’s “One Call Away.” The papers and stickers from this printable made these pages super easy to put together, and I love the way they turned out!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s fandom post. Have you heard this Charlie Puth song before? What did you think?

Happy fangirling!
