A Good Time All Round: Enola Holmes Movie Review

It’s my first ever movie/book review! I watched the new Netflix movie Enola Holmes and absolutely adored it! Hear my thoughts on the plot, the characters, and the structure of the movie below. Warning: Spoilers ahead!! Hope you enjoy this Enola Holmes movie review!

The star: Millie Bobbie Brown as Enola Holmes

I was already familiar (and you may be too) with the actress who plays the main role in this movie: Millie Bobbie Brown. She also plays Eleven in the Stranger Things! Her role in this movie reminded me of a cross between Anne Hathaway and Emma Watson. I’m looking forward now to see what else she’ll do!

Plot

The plot of this movie is pretty simple, but there are so many moving parts too. It starts with Enola and her mother living together in the country, and her “liberal” education (for nineteenth century England). On her sixteenth birthday, Enola’s mother inexplicably disappears, and Enola is sent on an adventure to discern what happened to her and how to get her back. Along the way, she fights bad guys, uses her various unusual skills, and meets a charming young lad who may or may not become a love interest.

Characters

  • Enola: the main character, a sixteen-year-old girl with a ton of skills and a bright and independent spirit
  • Sherlock
  • Other brother
  • Maid
  • Mother
  • Man in the Bowler Hat
  • The Vicount Fawksberry, Marquis of Basilwether
  • Secret Society Ladies
  • Countess and Family
  • Boarding School Lady

Themes

Enola tells us at the beginning of the movie that her name is an anagram of “alone,” and this is a recurring theme throughout the movie. Eventually, she comes to realize that she isn’t alone and begins to rely on others more than she did before. There’s also a theme of being the younger sister of the famous detective, as expected. Enola frequently one-ups Sherlock, much to his dismay, and easily foils her brothers’ plans to “educate” her in the ways of a lady. The movie also makes a point of inverting various societal values in a very hilarious way, and ends with a generational, poor-vs.-rich, old-vs.-new climax.

Memorable Moments/Quotes

This movie’s strong point, along with the visual effects, is its sense of humor and knack for witty one-liners. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • “Vicount Irritation, Marquis of Bothersomeshire”
  • “You’re a man when I tell you you’re a man”
  • *significant looks to camera after brothers said something stupid*
  • “You’re being emotional. It’s understandable, but unnecessary.”
  • “Sometimes you must dangle your feet in the water in order to attract the sharks.”
    • “Why would we want to attract the bloody sharks???”
      • “Good point.”

Conclusion

This movie gets five stars from me for sure! I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a good strong female lead and lots of humor and mystery.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this review of Enola Holmes on Netflix. If you did, please do me a solid and share with all your peeps using the graphic below. And let me know if you’ve seen this movie and what I should watch next!
