It’s Hoot Owl Daaaayyy!!!! I definitely had other plans for today’s post but this takes precedent. Sorry not sorry 😎 To clarify, Hoot Owl Day is the day when all the superfans of Owl City celebrate… all things Owl City. Today I’m sharing how I’ll be celebrating Hoot Owl Day 2021 with a tag (of sorts) that I came up with myself. Hopefully the other Owl City fans out there in the blogosphere will find this tag and participate if you wish, but for now enjoy!!
1. When did you discover Owl City?
I can tell you the exact moment that I first heard/fell in love with Owl City: sixth grade (2010), Saturday nights, listening to the radio. The first song I ever heard was the remix of “Hello Seattle”, and that song is still one of my very favorites to this day 💖
2. What is your favorite album?
I’m quite fond of almost every song that Adam Young has ever made, as most of us are. My favorite album would either be “Maybe I’m Dreaming” (classic old, pre-pop-phase) or “Cinematic” (which pretty much embodies the best of his music for me).
3. What Owl City song makes you the most happy/sad/relaxed? (different from a favorite song 😜)
I adore the song “How I Became the Sea” for its dreamy relaxing feel. Lots of Owl City songs are similar, but this one is just… ahhhhhh. I love to use it to stretch right before taking a nap.
4. Which are your top 5 (or more, I won’t judge) favorite Owl City songs?
- “If My Heart Was a House”
- “Always” (I wrote three different posts about it 😆 here’s the first one)
- “The Real World”
- “Meteor Shower”
- “Hello Seattle – Remix”
- “Enchanted”
- “Eternity”
You might notice that only one of my favorite songs is on the “favorite albums” list, and none are on “Maybe I’m Dreaming.” This is because I value “Maybe I’m Dreaming” as a whole experience, so I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite song from that album 😜
5. Any Owl City memes or famous social media moments to share?
Shoutout/throwback to the GENIUS storytelling posts that Adam used to post on Instagram, but now only exist on Pinterest and also blogs around the internets. This one is my absolute favorite in all of history, found on Pinterest. I clicked on the link attached to the pin but couldn’t seem to find the image I’m linking to. Here’s their blog anyway: https://itsjustlife231.tumblr.com/search/owl+city
And the story, which I love so much because it just represents all the beautiful innocent dorky adorableness that is Adam Young.
This actually kind of came true with the new song that came out on January 1! Find out what I mean here 😉
6. How many concerts have you been to?
I’ve only been to one Owl City concert, mostly because I was either too broke or didn’t have transportation when he was on tour. The one I did go to was on September 28, 2018, aka the happiest day of my entire life ✨🤩
7. Do you own any Owl City merch?
While I was at the concert in 2018, I bought the Cinematic style T-shirt and the blue jacket, which I have worn almost every day since then, including in the heat of summer (because I’m always cold anyway). I’d love to get some more though!!
8. Which song/album is your least favorite?
I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but I am not a fan of the “pop phase” that Adam Young went through in 2014-2015 ish, around the time that “The Midsummer Station” came out. There is very little that I can criticize about Owl City, but that era seemed like a time when Adam was feeling pressured to create songs that would be popular at the expense of his own genuine style. This did lead to him creating all the instrumental soundtracks in 2016, though, so I’m not really complaining.
9. What memories do you associate with Owl City’s music?
As with the first song I ever heard, I can tell you the exact moment/season of my life when each of Owl City’s albums came out. Specific songs are definitely associated with memories or life events, usually having to do with whatever boy/boys I was crushing on at the time 😅😹
- “Ocean Eyes” – sixth grade, dancing in my room at night with my sister, who was about five or six at the time
- “All Things Bright and Beautiful” – second half of sixth grade, my first real music player (tiny purple Sansa clip) and listening to music in P.E. class.
- “The Midsummer Station” – seventh grade, but mostly eighth grade when I listened to “Silhouette” on repeat after my first crush violently rejected me hehe
- “Ultraviolet” – ninth or tenth grade, listening to “Up All Night” and thinking about yet another impossible crush. Later, an online relationship with a guy from camp that crashed and burned my freshman year of college
- “Mobile Orchestra” – eleventh grade, listening to my own music at a school dance. “I Found Love” was the song for the one “good” crush I ever had (who, as it turns out, liked me back the whole timeeeeeee)
- “Cinematic” – freshman year of college, particularly the second semester when all my life plans changed drastically against my will and “Be Brave” literally kept me going. Also I cried when the full album came out because “Always” was so beautiful and spoke to me so much.
10. If he were to come out with a new album, what do you think it should be about?
I would love to see songs like “Hey There Rabbit” and just Adam being spontaneous and unique and weird because that’s the true and genuine Owl City that we all know and love. Also more hymn covers and some of the older sound like that of “Maybe I’m Dreaming”, although I have grown to love some of the newer songs. Or another Sky Sailing album! Any new music he chooses to make would automatically be amazing though 🤩💖
