How to Train Your Dragon Bible Journal with Me: Awe & Wonder

Hello, friends, and welcome to another Bible Journal with me post! This week I journaled about the How to Train Your Dragon series and the beauty of God’s Word. Enjoy!

Verses & Thoughts

When I go to create a Bible journaling page, my thoughts usually go in one of two directions: either I’m studying the Bible and it reminds me of a fandom or mental image, or I’m thinking about a fandom and a Bible verse comes to mind with a similar theme or idea. Either way, I end up digesting God’s Word in new ways!

In this case, I was thinking about the HTTYD series (since that’s my bullet journal theme for March) and kept coming back to the Romantic Flight scene where Hiccup and Toothless kidnap Astrid and take her on a joyride and she goes from fear and hostility to wonder and admiration in a matter of minutes. I especially love this moment when she has the most enraptured facial expression as she runs her fingers through these cotton candy-colored clouds, and then finally acknowledges that dragons aren’t what she and all the other Vikings thought they were.

This attitude of hostility and fear becoming awe and wonder reminded me of the many different moments in the Bible where God’s awesomeness is described, or where people who were once hostile or fearful are brought to an understanding of who He is. Elijah and the chariots of fire or Balaam and the talking donkey are a couple of stories that could be interesting to think about with this, but I ended up focusing on the awesomeness of God as described in Psalm 86:

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,

abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;

listen to my plea for grace.

In the day of my trouble I call upon you,

for you answer me.

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,

nor are there any works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come

and worship before you, O Lord,

and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things;

you alone are God.

Teach me your way, O LORD,

that I may walk in your truth;

Psalm 86:6-11 Esv

My Process

I started off this Bible journaling page with a sketch of the Romantic Flight scene using a blue erasable pencil. I printed off a screenshot of the exact frame I wanted to create and traced over the outline, then filled in the details. Mostly I just needed the initial proportions of the characters; the rest of the scene is relatively easy to fill in.

Next, I filled the entire page with my best approximation of the gauzy pink clouds from the movie using gouache paints. Once that layer dried, I filled in the details of Toothless, Astrid, and Hiccup with some smaller brushes. I finished out the page by highlighting the verses, writing out a quote from the movie, and writing a few of my thoughts below.
