Saturday Shuffle #14: the one where Season 2 of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is finally here!!!

And we’re back! After a short hiatus, Que Lo Kayslee is back with another episode of the Saturday Shuffle. This week we’re celebrating the release of Season 2 of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, aka my favorite show ever!! This show is so great because of its emotional power, amazing characters, and phenomenal soundtrack, which of course is why it merits being featured here. Enjoy!

“Carry On” (originally by fun.)

Season 1 of this show ended with a wonderful group rendition of “American Pie” which I greatly appreciated, so I was happy to see Zoey and her family perform “Carry On” to kick off season 2. The choreography that went with this song was SO GOOD as well. The cast sing so well together, with the lower and higher parts blending together and an excellent alternation between solos and chorus parts.

“That’s Life” by anson eggerss

A brief departure from Zoey, this song was discovered through a TikTok video. As in, the artist made a super cool mash-up video and I found his Spotify from his profile. The style of this song is somewhere between lo-fi pop and alt rock/coffeehouse, with an electronic track and breathy vocals floating over the top of it all. Definitely a fit for a road trip down a one-lane road or busy highway on a Saturday afternoon.

“I Want to Break Free” (originally by Queen)

Back to Zoey now, with a fantastic solo piece by Zoey’s brother. I feel like this song wasn’t originally intended the way it’s used in the show, but it’s SO ADORABLE I CAN’T EVEN! Basically the show uses it to describe a new father’s desire to leave his job and spend more time with his child. Sooooooo cuuuuuuuute!!! And of course the choreography is excellent once again. My favorite part: “I’ve fallen in love, I’ve fallen in love for the first time, and this time I know it’s for real…” with a loving glance at baby πŸ€©πŸ’–

“Juice” (originally by Lizzo)

Wrapping up this week’s playlist is another headliner, this time by Zoey’s friend/complicated former love interest Simon, who sings it after finishing a successful work endeavor. Having never really listened to the original (it’s apparently highly explicit), I still appreciate the adaptation from female lead to male, with a bit of a twist to the backing track as well. It felt so good to see Simon, who has spent most of the show in a serious/grieving/emotionally unstable place, feel good about himself for once.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s Saturday Shuffle. If you did, please do me a solid and share with all your peeps using the graphic below. And go check out Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist if you haven’t already!

Happy Saturday!
