Hello, friends, and welcome to week 2 of Wings! In this study, we’re exploring four different headspaces or facets of our identity in Christ, which can provide us with an effective way of approaching the throne of grace and living out our lives as believers. This week, we’re studying our identity as Seekers or students of God’s Word who want nothing more than to know Him more deeply. This character includes some of my favorite fictional princesses and heroines, so I’m extra excited to explore it with you. Enjoy!
Fandom: Elsa from Frozen, Hermione from Harry Potter, Moana, Belle
Truth: God is constantly seeking us, and wants us to seek Him with all our hearts in return.
Want to find out more about the heart behind this devotional series? Here’s the post where I introduce each of the four identity-facets we’re exploring this month!
The Character – Elsa, Hermione, Belle, Moana
I imagine the Seeker type as a preteen or teenager, one of the “smart kids” who always has a book in their hand. You might find them looking down at the ground or up at the sky, fascinated by the world around them. They might be introverted and prone to daydreaming, but if you ask them you’ll discover that they are a fountain of knowledge. Here’s a list of specific characteristics associated with the Seeker:
- Studious, determined, intrepid, constantly looking for the truth and uncovering mysteries
- In tune with the Voice that calls to deeper knowledge and wisdom
- Looks for any way to provide for her people
- Constant thirst and hunger for the Word which leads to consistent quality time learning from it
- Asking for God to meet with her and show His face and His character
- Unable to contain the desire to share newfound knowledge and wisdom with others
Elsa
I don’t really see these characteristics in Elsa in the original Frozen movie, but they are definitely on display in Frozen 2. She has not one but TWO whole songs about going into the unknown and asking the Voice that has been calling to her for days to “Show Yourself.” She approaches the mist-shrouded forest with both caution and wonder, and quickly befriends the four nature spirits (especially the water-horse and the fire-lizard, so cute!!). While she loves her family and her people, Elsa mentions a feeling that there’s more for her Out There in the World. I especially LOVE the scene with “Show Yourself,” as it sounds almost IDENTICAL to several different passages in Scripture.
Hermione
Hermione is another character who is thrown into an unfamiliar world and navigates it with relative ease, right from the beginning. It is clear that, despite being Muggle-born, she has a wealth of knowledge about the wizarding world, most of which she gleans from books. Who else can quote Hogwarts: A History from memory? And while her seemingly infinite knowledge does annoy other character at times, it also comes in very handy during the Golden Trio’s many adventures. Her famous quote, “When in doubt, go to the library,” reminds me of all of Psalm 119 and many other passages.
Here’s a post I wrote inspired by that famous quote!
Belle
Belle is characterized as someone who loves a good story and who wants to live in one herself (”I want much more than this provincial life!”). I have a theory that, as she lives in the Beast’s castle and discovers the enchanted rose, she realizes that she is, in fact, living in a fairy tale. Her knowledge of fairy tale lore and her innately open mind allow her to see the Beast for who he really is in the end, which saves his life and restores the castle and its inhabitants to their former state. I just love the idea of Belle seeing the Beast as the human prince he once was, rather than the furry, horned creature that he had become. It reminds me of the passage in 1 Samuel 16 where David is chosen as King of Israel…
Moana
Moana to me is both a Seeker and an Ambassador. At the beginning of her story, she only wants to go beyond the reef to satisfy her own longing for adventure. She doesn’t understand why her father forbids her from doing so, and her parents are hard-pressed to keep her away from the Ocean. This reminds me of the single-minded focus that the Seeker can have on whatever it is that they’re seeking, which can be positive or negative.
Here’s a post that over-analyzes Moana’s entire storyline!
Verses
Looking for truth and uncovering mysteries
‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’
Jeremiah 33:3
Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
Isaiah 55:6
Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually.
Psalm 105:4
Show Your wonderful faithfulness, Savior of those who take refuge at Your right hand From those who rise up [against them.]
Psalm 17:7
Seeking the Lord to know Him more deeply comes from an innate confidence in His goodness and holiness. We know that He is worth searching for, and we know that He will answer us.
The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. May your heart live forever!
Psalm 22:26
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God does not [see] as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
In tune with Holy Spirit, who answers your searching heart
‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. ‘And you will seek Me and find [Me] when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:12-13
“But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find [Him] if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.
Deuteronomy 4:29
“Behold, I am sending My messenger, and he will clear a way before Me. And the Lord, whom you are seeking, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of armies.
, Malachi 3:1
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, LORD, have not abandoned those who seek You.
Psalm 9:10
May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; May those who love Your salvation continually say, “The LORD be exalted!”
Psalm 40:16
Knowing and acknowledging that everything you learn is for His glory
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him [be] the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:14-21
Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things [that are] above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:1
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always [being] ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.
1 Peter 3:15-16
This verse in particular reminds me of Hermione’s personality. She has a tendency to correct others’ errors and constantly have the right answer that, at first, seems like the trait of an “insufferable know-it-all,” but actually reveals an innate desire for truth and knowledge that is invaluable.
This is the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face–[even] Jacob. Selah
Psalm 24:6
[When You said,] “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “I shall seek Your face, LORD.”
Psalm 27:8
A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. God, You are my God; I shall be watching for You; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and exhausted land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1
The humble have seen [it and] are glad; You who seek God, let your heart revive.
Psalm 69:32
Sharing knowledge with others
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, [and] spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16
For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted [it] not [as] the word of [mere] men, but as what it really is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned [them,] and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man [or woman] of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:14-17
May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And may those who love Your salvation say continually, “May God be exalted!”
Psalm 70:4
Reflection
Here are some reflection questions to help us apply what we’ve studied today:
- What keeps you from hearing the voice of God, calling you to seek His face?
- Where does the “hunger and thirst for righteousness” come from? How is this accomplished?
- If you find that you aren’t eager to seek the truth found in God’s Word, ask Him to give you the desire to learn from it. He will answer your prayer!
