No, he didn’t fall off the face of the earth… lol
Happy Friday, all my friends! With the brand-new Owl City album releasing in ONE WEEK, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share all the songs you might not know existed that Adam Young has released since the last album came out in 2018. Enjoy!
2019 – The year of the dubstep
2019 saw Adam Young contributing to a handful of singles created by a couple of different dubstep-style artists. Although the music was different from the trademark Owl City sound we know and love, Adam’s lovely vocals are unmistakable.
Alive – Schiller feat. Adam Young
This song has a nice touch of electronica to it, but the dominant sound is the gradual-build and pounding beat of a dubstep song. Not my favorite of the ones he’s contributed to since 2018, but still pretty cool.
Ready to Fly – Didrick feat. Adam Young
This is one of my favorites of the new Owl City music since 2018, and I’m probably going to write a whole blog post about it someday. I love the lyrics, the layers of the instrumental, and of course Adam’s vocals are 🤩🤩🤩 It’s a little more chill than the previous song, and the range of Adam’s voice is a little bit higher for most of the music, with the chills-inducing lower-range section on the bridge that has been so successful in the past.
Eternity – Paul van Dyk feat. Adam Young
This one is another that I’ve really enjoyed. The lyrics are definitely the type that I could think about as a prayer or worship song (“Your beauty burns through the darkness, crystal and clear from here to eternity”) and the instrumental has a nice catchy beat to it. It also has just a little bit more of Adam’s touch to it than some of the other songs released in 2019, though still with a heavy dubstep influence. Could this be the direction of the new album for 2022???
Don’t Say You Love Me – Ryeland & Adam Young
Although there will never be a song that Adam Young creates/contributes to that I hate, there are a few that are less than amazing to me, and this is one of them. The dubstep influence is strongest here, and it’s one of the songs that is more beat than lyrics. The only real words are “Don’t say you love me” repeated a few times, and the vocals don’t sound like Adam, so aside from a hint of his touch in the music, this one is least representative of the Owl City we’ve all come to love.
2021 – First song under Owl City!!
After two whole YEARS of no Owl City music, and hardly a whisper from Adam on any social media, 2021 saw the first song released under the Owl City name since 2018. I wrote a whole post about this song on the day it released, and it’s still one of my most popular posts 😸 you can read it here if you’d like : )
Jesus Freak (Owl City Remix) – DC Talk + Owl City
I’m happy to report that this song is still absolutely jam-worthy, even a year later 🤘🎧🔥
2022 – The Year of the Hoot Owl (HE’S BACK!!!)
Between January 2021 and early 2022, there was no new Owl City music, and aside from a couple of teases on instagram, Adam Young was all but silent on social media.
And then it happened.
2022, the Year of The Hoot Owl, in which Adam Young re-appeared on social media, released not one but FOUR new songs, AND officially announced a new album, new tour, and new merch!!
It’s been a good year, friends, and it’s only going to get better 😸🤩🥰
Let the Light In – Jonah Micah + Owl City
This is the first new Owl City song of 2022, created with Christian artist Jonah Micah. For the first time since oh, maybe 2015, Christian radio-listeners worldwide have had the unique joy of hearing Adam’s voice come on unexpectedly from time to time. What a feeling! This is a quality song, with some solid harmonies, genuine-sounding lyrics, and the familiar touch of electronic melodies that were introduced in Cinematic and have come to symbolize Adam’s style.
Re-Enchanted World – John Mark McMillan feat. Owl City
This song is not my favorite of the new Owl City songs in 2022, but it’s still pretty good 🤷♀️ I love Adam’s parts, and I enjoy the instrumentals; the lyrics are pretty cool too. It’s just John Mark McMillan’s voice that just isn’t my personal preference. Again, not a bad song, but it’s sort of like “Good Time” – we listen to the other guy because they’re singing with Adam (or at least I do)😹
Forever and Always – Armin Van Buuren feat. Owl City
Third to come out this year is “Forever and Always,” originally released as a live recording from one of Armin van Buuren’s shows. This song’s lyrics almost sound like a reflection on world events of the past couple years, but they’re poetic enough to be open to any interpretation. It’s also a newly-beloved balance between the dubstep style of a fellow artist and Adam’s absolutely exquisite, light and airy vocals. Much love, lots of jamming 😸🎧
All Star (Owl City Remix) – Smash Mouth + Owl City
“This song is from the year 3000, released a little bit early. We don’t understand it yet, but we all know it’s good” – a friend
I absolutely LOVE this song! Adam has proven that he is excellent at taking a classic and well-loved song (like “Jesus Freak”) that has all but defined a generation and adding his own twist to it. This version of “All Star” comes out sounding like a nostalgic video game soundtrack, which is so perfect for those who follow Adam’s social medias. It just fits him so well, and truly does the original justice.
Kelly Time – Open Studio Door Edition
This song is the FIRST in the brand-new album that is officially coming out in 2023!!! We still don’t know the exact release date, but this first song is now available for pre-save on all the music platforms, and the rough, “open studio door” edition is available on YouTube.
The song itself has all of the classic Owl City trademarks, from ironic lyrics to a multifaceted melody that includes everything from guitar to chimes and a calypso-island feel. It’s written as the plotline of the movie Castaway, but from the perspective of the volleyball? IDK, I’ve never seen the movie, but I still GREATLY enjoy this song, and can’t wait to binge it on January 6, 2023. Three cheers for new Owl City music in 2023, and stay tuned for a full-length fangirl session as soon as the album releases!!
