Citizens – Everything and More (a Christian song?!)

Happy Monday, friends, and welcome to another fandom journaling post! I’ve always thought that the Fangirl: Fulfilled journal that I designed this past spring could be used for Christian songs and stories as well as secular ones, and today we’re going to explore this possibility. I’m journaling the verses and truth behind “Everything and More” by CCM group Citizens. Enjoy!

Fandom: “Deeper than deep, brighter than bright/ More than our words could ever do to describe/ Truer than true, purer than pure/ You’re everything, and still You are more…”

Verses: Psalm 145:3, Isaiah 40:25-26, Job 9:9-10, Ephesians 1:3-6, Psalm 8:3-5

Truth: God’s greatness has no limits, and that makes Him infinitely worthy of our worship.

The fandom: Citizens “Everything and More”

This post was brought to you in part by a YouTuber called Faith and her channel, How to Faith a Life. She’s a Seminary graduate and is super passionate about helping people understand and apply the Bible effectively. One of her biggest points is evaluating all the media that we consume, including Christian music. I’m currently watching this video that she made called “Are the 2023 Top Christian Songs Biblical?” And it’s super good! Definitely go watch that after you read this post : )

As it turns out, Faith reviewed a cover of “You Will Be Found” which was kind of fun. I definitely left a comment on it with my post about that (very beautiful!!) song. You can read the post here:

Dear Evan Hansen – You Will Be Found.

But as for this song, it reminds me of the scene from Moana where baby Moana gets introduced to the Ocean and there’s this view of the water pulling back little by little. I’m OBSESSED with the way that the layers and depth are revealed a little at a time. Kinda like the theological quote that says something like, “The Word of God has places that an infant can wade in, and depths where an elephant has to swim.” Like there’s so much infinite depth to who God is, but He allows us to know Him in ways that make sense to us as finite humans. Like using a Disney movie to teach about His character, maybe? Hmmmm…

Wow, I’ve written two whole paragraphs and haven’t said ANYTHING about “Everything and More” 🤣😅 so here we go. I love this song, obviously. It has a nice sound to it, and the lyrics are SO AMAZING. Like the more I look into them and think about them, the more depth and richness they have. Here’s the chorus:

Deeper than deep, brighter than bright, more than our words could ever do to describe

Truer than true, purer than pure, You’re everything and still You are More

Everything and More…

And then there’s the bridge, which really makes me think of that scene from Moana;

More than we ever thought, we couldn’t dream it up/ We’ll spend forever with You, won’t find the edges of You

You’re our eternity, infinite destiny/ Go on forever with You, won’t find the edges of You

But are there Bible verses that agree with what this song is saying, or is it just poetry from the artist’s mind? Here’s what I found:

Verses

Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable.

Psalm 145:3 NASB

See what I mean?! Limitless and awe-inspiring. That’s the God we serve.

“To whom then will you compare Me That I would be [his] equal?” says the Holy One. Raise your eyes on high And see who has created these [stars,] The One who brings out their multitude by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of [His] power, Not one [of them] is missing.

Isaiah 40:25-26 NASB

Who makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the constellations of the south. [It is He] who does great things, the unfathomable, And wondrous works without number.

Job 9:9-10 NASB

Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly [places] in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons [and daughters] through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:3-6 NASB

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have set in place;

What is man that You think of him, And a son of man that You are concerned about him?

Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty!

Psalm 8:3-5 NASB

Application

As a result of this lovely song and the Bible verses and truths that lie beneath it, here are some “I will” statements to apply IRL:

  • Look for the places where I’ve tried to limit God’s goodness, faithful love, sovereignty, etc.
  • Confess and repent, then marvel at how utterly limitless He is
  • Look forward to eternity, where I STILL won’t know everything but I’ll be closer to Him than ever

While I was studying and reflecting on what this song talks about, I felt led to look up the words of C.H. Spurgeon, a very poetic old-timey preacher/Bible scholar, on Psalm 145:3. Here’s my favorite part of what I found:

In some beings greatness is but vastness of evil: in him it is magnificence of goodness… The best adoration of the Unsearchable is to own him to be so, and close the eyes in reverence before the excessive light of his glory. Not all the minds of all the centuries shall suffice to search out the unsearchable riches of God; he is past finding out; and, therefore, his deserved praise is still above and beyond all that we can render to him.

Spurgon on Psalm 145:3, from this commentary

I pray that you will be challenged to examine your heart and find the places where you can let go of the fear of the unknown and learn to trust, love, and worship our Limitless God more fully.

By the way, here are a couple posts about Moana, just in case you’re curious/a fan of that amazing movie (as you SHOULD be lol):

The journal pages

Here are the journaling pages that I did for the song “Everything and More” by Citizens. I start with the lyrics of the song, then find underlying themes and the Scripture that addresses them, and finish with how to apply the verses and use them to share truth with the people around me.

Here’s a free printable to use in your own journaling process on Citizens’ “Everything and More.” I used it myself in the journal pages above!

Conclusion

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s Citizens “Everything and More” fandom journaling post. As it turns out, there are *some* overtly Christian songs that are worth fangirling over, and examining the Word and the things that we consume, regardless of their labels, is always worthwhile.

Happy fangirling!
