Coldplay – Army of One

Fandom: “… my army of one is gonna fight for you.” – Coldplay

Verses: Exodus 14:14, Psalm 138:3, 6-7

Nugget: God is the Lord of Angel Armies and He is fighting for us!

Day four of Blogmas is today, which means this is the perfect opportunity to introduce my Blogmas friends to this series! Every week, I write about one of my fandoms, be it song or book or movie character, and how it relates to the Gospel. If you’re a Christian, I welcome you, but if you aren’t, I’m even happier that you’re here! Consider this my invitation for you to consider a song you might enjoy through a new lens. Here’s the Gospel according to Coldplay: Army of One. Enjoy!

God sees us when we feel small

I stumbled upon Psalm 138 today and really read it for maybe the first time. Verse 6 really stood out to me: “Though the LORD is exalted he takes note of the humble: but he knows the haughty from a distance” (CSB). Why does God fight for us? Because we are His. Even if you don’t know Him yet, even if you feel small and insignificant, He sees you.

God rescues us – even when we ask for trouble

Verse 7 kind of makes me chuckle: “If I walk into the thick of danger, you will preserve my life from the anger of my enemies. You will extend your hand; your right hand will save me.” It’s almost as though God Himself is saying, “Well, honey, you got yourself into this mess, but I’ll get you out anyway because you’re my daughter and I love you.” At some point, even the closest of relatives or friends will give up on you, you know? Everyone has a limit, a point at which they no longer have the strength or the ability or the will power to keep supporting you.

But God. Will never. Give up. On you.

“My heart is my gun, army of one, it’s my only weapon, army of one.” The singer of this song is writing to a romantic interest, as per usual. But imagine God saying these words for a minute. God’s heart is what fights for us, even more than His (metaphorical) hand. He wants more than anything to have a relationship with you, and He will do whatever it takes to get there.

But what about when you need the hand of God to help you? Is He up to the challenge??

God is strong enough to save… the ultimate Army of One 😉

“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent” (Exodus 14:14 ESV).

Yes, God is capable. And because of His great love for us, He is also willing. He is here, He sees you, and He will stop at nothing to get to you wherever you are. All you have to do is ask, and He will come. “On the day I called, you answered me; you increased strength within me” (Psalm 138:3 CSB). There’s no schedule-juggling or missed calls with God; He’ll come the moment you call.

Knowing this makes me feel a little giddy inside, like I’m really something special. Knowing Jesus is fighting for you is a lot like the feeling you get when you’re falling in love for the first time; all shooting stars and ocean sunsets. The difference is, Jesus will never be “over” you; His love lasts forever. If you’ve never experienced this, or if you have questions, check out this post 🙂

“My army of one is gonna fight for you; my army of one is gonna fall for you.
