Gryffindor Bible Verses: How Gryffindor Contributes to the Kingdom

Welcome back to the final installment of the Gospel According to Hogwarts! This week’s focus is Gryffindor house. Most well-known of all the Hogwarts houses, Gryffindors are known for their courage, passion, and nerve. Enjoy this list of Gryffindor Bible verses!

Fandom: Gryffindor House and its distinguishing characteristics.

Verses: Proverbs 28:1, Ephesians 3:9-12, 2 Samuel 6:22, Proverbs 21:21, Ephesians 6:13, Acts 14:19-20

Nugget: Gryffindor and its distinguishing characteristics are valuable and useful to the Kingdom of God.

Boldness

Perhaps the most well-known trait of Gryffindor house is that of boldness or courage. In Biblical terms, this translates to boldness in sharing the Gospel and in doing what’s right. Here are some verses that match with this characteristic:

  • “The wicked run when no one is chasing them, but the righteous are bold as lions.” Proverbs 28:1
  • “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13
  • “…to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, n whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.” Ephesians 3:9-12

Honor

Another trait of Gryffindor is that of honor. Personal honor or dignity is perhaps more typical of Slytherin, but I imagine that Gryffindors have greater concern for the honor of others (another term for this might be “chivalry,” which is decidedly dead). Here are some verses that align with this attribute of Gryffindor:

  • “I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.โ€ 2 Samuel 6:22
  • “Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.” Proverbs 21:21
  • “That all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.” John 5:23

Strong Will

The third Gryffindor trait I’d like to share is that of stubbornness (having a “strong will” in more polite terms). When used for personal gain, this trait can be counterproductive, but when turned to the service of the Kingdom, a strong will leads to perseverance and the ability to withstand various troubles. Here are some verses that support this trait of Gryffindor house:

  • “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:13
  • “Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.” Philippians 4:1
  • “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4

Zero. Chill.

And finally, the characteristic of Gryffindor that most applies to the Kingdom of God is what some would call “zero chill.” That is to say, someone who never seems to stop doing what they love or pursuing what God has called them to do, even in the midst of extreme difficulties. The best missionaries, including the apostle Paul, have this characteristic in my opinion. In the book of Acts, for example, Paul literally gets beat up and left for dead, but gets right back up and moves on to the next town. See what I mean? Zero. Chill! Here are some verses that will explain what I mean:

  • “But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.” Acts 14:19-20
  • Peter said to him, โ€œEven if I must die with you, I will not deny you!โ€ And all the disciples said the same. Matthew 26:35
  • “No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.โ€ Isaiah 54:17
