Owl City – Rainbow Veins

Greetings, beautiful peoples, and welcome to another fandoms-as-Gospel post! Today, partially in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day/Spring Break week, I’m journaling and writing about a song with rainbows. Owl City’s “Rainbow Veins” is soothing and cheerful, nostalgic and meaningful, and it’s one of my favorites. Hope you enjoy!

Fandom: “Cheer up and dry your damp eyes, and tell me when it rains; then I’ll blend up that rainbow above you and shoot it through your veins…” – Owl City, Rainbow Veins

Verses: Psalm 94:19, Phil. 4:4, Psalm 33:20-21, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 56:8, Psalm 55:22

Truth: God is aware of and cares about our sorrows and anxieties, and He is both compassionate and sovereign.

“Rainbow Veins” is one of Owl City’s older songs (I believe its album released in 2008), and to me, that makes it even more classic. It has a nice percussion (xylophone-like) instrumentation throughout, with a little bit of faded-old-timey-radio effect on Adam Young’s vocals. The lyrics are also amazing, with themes of mental health and encouragement and a hint of romance. My favorite line from the song is the one above, but there’s also this one:

Your nerves gather with the altitude/ exhale the stress so you don’t come unglued/ somewhere there is a happy affair, a ghost of a good mood…

Adam Young does a really good job of expressing honest emotions like anxiety, loneliness, and sorrow without becoming overly hopeless. The instrumentation of “Rainbow Veins” helps with this. Listening to it feels like having a friend sitting across from you at a coffee shop, listening to your concerns and offering encouragement while rain pours down outside.

There’s some really great commentary on this song on Genius.com, too!

Here’s another post about God/Holy Spirit as a friend who comforts and counsels us in our low moments.

The Verses

While studying this song’s themes for myself, here are some verses I found:

When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

Psalm 94:19 ESV

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 55:22 ESV

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 ESV

Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.

Psalm 33:20-21

You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?

Psalm 56:8 ESV

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Philippians 4:4 ESV

Application

As a result of what we’ve learned today, here are some “I will” statements to help us live out our faith in real, real life:

  • I will cast all my burdens and put all my trust in the Lord
  • I will ask for comfort, joy, and peace when I need it
  • I will rejoice by giving praise and thanks to the Lord even (especially) when I feel anxious
  • I will remember that He both knows and cares when I feel sad or anxious, even though His thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways are higher than mine
